Top 5 Phone Accessories You Didn’t Know You Needed

When most of us buy a phone, all we’re thinking about is the phone itself and maybe, just maybe, a pouch and screen guard. But these days, phone accessories aren’t just for aesthetics. They can literally change how you use your phone. They can make it faster, safer, and way more convenient.

If you’re in Nigeria, you already know how important it is to stay connected, especially with NEPA wahala, traffic stress, or just trying to avoid fake or low-quality products. So here are 5 phone accessories you probably never knew you needed. Once you try them, there’s no going back.

Don’t just go for big size, look for fast-charging support and trusted brands like Oraimo, Anker, or Xiaomi. Some cheap power banks can mess up your phone in the long run.

Common Mistakes Nigerians Make When Buying Used Phones

Buying used phones in Nigeria is a smart money move, especially with the crazy cost of brand-new devices these days. But for many people, it ends up being a costly mistake instead of a bargain. They either fall for fake specs or stolen phones because there are traps everywhere.

So before you go out to get your own UK-used or Nigerian-used device, read this first. This article will help you spot the common mistakes Nigerians make when buying used phones and how to avoid falling into the same trap.

1. Not Checking IMEI or Activation Lock

One of the biggest blunders when buying used phones is failing to check the IMEI status or iCloud/Google lock. Many people have bought phones that were stolen or locked, only to discover they’re now holding a glorified mirror.

What to do:

  • Dial *#06# to get the IMEI

  • Use websites like IMEI.info or iCloud checkers to verify status

  • If it’s an iPhone, make sure iCloud is signed out completely before you pay

2. Buying Without Testing Properly

“Everything dey work” is NOT a test. Some people test only the camera and screen, but forget important parts like:

  • Battery health

  • Charging port

  • Fingerprint/Face ID

  • Speaker and mic

  • SIM detection and network signal

What to do:

  • Take your SIM card, earpiece, charger, and a trusted friend when buying

  • Use phone testing apps or dial codes to run diagnostics

  • Test everything before you pay, even if you’re in a hurry

3. Falling for Cheap Prices

You sef reason am. If someone is selling an iPhone 12 for ₦120,000, you should know that something is wrong.

Many Nigerians fall for “sweet prices” when buying used phones and later discover:

  • The phone is stolen

  • It’s fake

  • Battery or board issues

  • It shuts down randomly

What to do:

  • Always research current market prices for the model you’re buying

  • If the price is too sweet, pause and ask, “Why is this cheap?”

  • Better to pay slightly more and have peace of mind

4. No Receipt or Proof of Purchase

Many people buy used phones and walk away with no receipt, no seller info, nothing. If something goes wrong or the police track the phone as stolen, you have no defense.

What to do:

  • Always collect a written receipt with:

    • Seller’s full name and number

    • IMEI number of the phone

    • Price, date, and signature

5. Buying From Random Strangers Online

Instagram DMs and Facebook groups are full of “plug for UK-used phones.” While some are legit, many are not. Scammers often:

  • Take your money and vanish

  • Send fake or broken phones

  • Deliver empty boxes

  • Block you after payment

What to do:

  • Deal only with verified vendors

  • Use pay-on-delivery where possible

  • Meet in safe public places or go to physical stores

6. Ignoring the Swap Option

Sometimes you want to upgrade, and your old phone still has value. But many Nigerians forget that swapping your phone can save you money and stress when getting used phones.

What to do:

  • Consider swapping instead of selling first

  • Use trusted platforms like The Phonepreneur where you can swap safely

  • Ensure the value of your old phone is correctly assessed

7. Not Asking Questions

Many Nigerians are shy to ask or just don’t know the right questions. If you’re buying used phones, you must ask:

  • Why is the phone being sold?

  • Is it refurbished or “follow-come”?

  • Has it been repaired before?

  • How long was it used?

What to do:

  • Don’t be afraid to “over-ask.” If the seller is impatient or shady, that’s your red flag.

Thinking of buying, selling, or swapping a phone? Start with The Phonepreneur, it’s the smartest move you’ll make this year.

Why Swapping Phones Might Be Smarter Than Buying New

Let’s be real: phones don cost! Every time a new iPhone or Samsung drops, it feels like you have to sell your kidney just to afford one. The price of some of these phones can pay 2 years’ rent in Festac!

But here’s the good news, friend: you don’t always have to buy brand new. There’s a smarter, pocket-friendly, and totally legit alternative that more Nigerians are catching on to. It is known as Phone Swapping.

In this post, The Phonepreneur breaks down why swapping phones might just be the best tech decision you’ll make this year.

1. It’s Way More Affordable

Brand new phones are expensive, no doubt. But with a swap, you can trade in your current phone and top up with cash to get something better without spending a fortune.

For example, instead of buying a brand new iPhone 13 Pro Max at ₦xxxxxxxxxxx, you could swap your iPhone XR + ₦xxxxxx and boom, you’re good to go!

Na upgrade without wahala.

2. Get More Value from Your Old Device

Instead of letting your old phone gather dust or crack more while you procrastinate, why not trade it in for value? Phone swapping gives your current device a second life, while you move up to something fresh.

It’s like selling your old car and driving off in a Benz. Well, small Benz sha, haha.

3. It’s Perfect for Smart Budgeting

Let’s say you just started a new job, or you’re a student managing pocket money. Swapping allows you to upgrade without wrecking your wallet.

Why take a loan to impress when you can swap smartly and save the rest for your data, feeding, or even jollof for the weekend?

4. No Need to Start from Scratch

Most swap deals involve gently-used or nearly-new phones. These phones are often still in top condition, clean, and tested, no factory faults etc. Some even come with a warranty, especially when you swap with trusted vendors (like The Phonepreneur, wink wink 😉).

You get a good phone without the risk of fake parts or dodgy sellers.

5. It’s Eco-Friendly (Yes, Really!)

Believe it or not, swapping phones is one of the ways you can help the environment, we know the whole world is crazy about this these days. By extending the life cycle of devices, you’re reducing e-waste and supporting tech sustainability.

So yeah, you’re being eco-friendly and saving money. That’s double double.

6. It’s Safe, When You Do It Right

Some people fear swapping because of fraudsters. But if you do your swap at a trusted phone shop or dealer, there’s nothing to fear. Always request:

  • A proper check of both devices

  • Clear terms of the swap

  • Receipt or documentation

At The Phonepreneur, our swaps come with honesty, transparency, and no stories that touch.

Conclusion: Be Wise, Swap Smart

Gone are the days when you had to “buy new or nothing.” In today’s economy, you have to move smart. Swapping your phone can give you the upgrade you want without putting your account balance in the ICU.

So next time your phone starts acting like it’s tired of life, don’t just throw it away or spend heavily on a new one, swap it like a boss!

The Truth About Phone Charging Myths You Still Believe

How many times have you heard something weird about charging your phone and thought, “E be like say na true o”? From “Don’t use your phone while charging, it will explode!” to “Always charge your phone to 100%,” the myths always fly everywhere like suya smoke in the air.

But today, The Phonepreneur is here to help you separate charging facts from fables. Let’s bust these myths once and for all, your battery (and pocket) will thank you later.

1. “You must always charge your phone to 100%.”

Truth: No, you don’t.

Modern smartphones use Lithium-ion batteries, and these don’t need to hit 100% to be “happy.” In fact, keeping your phone between 20% to 80% can actually help the battery last longer. Charging to 100% every single time can cause wear and tear faster over time. Na lie wey we dey believe since Nokia torchlight days.

2. “Don’t use your phone while charging, it will explode!”

Truth: Unless you’re using a fake charger, relax fam.

Using your phone while charging is safe, as long as you’re using original chargers and cables (not the N800 knockoffs from some parts of Computer Village). The explosion stories usually involve bad batteries or cheap power accessories.

Lesson: If it’s not certified, don’t plug it in.

3. “Overcharging spoils your battery.”

Truth: Modern phones are smarter than you think.

Once your phone hits 100%, it automatically stops charging. It doesn’t just keep sipping electricity till it bursts. However, leaving it plugged in overnight every single night can still cause long-term heat damage, especially if the phone is under your pillow.

4. “Charging your phone with a fast charger will spoil it.”

Truth: Only if your phone doesn’t support fast charging.

If your phone is fast-charge compatible, then it’s perfectly fine to use a fast charger. Phones today come with smart chips that regulate how much current flows into the device. The problem arises when you force a fast charger on a phone that isn’t designed for.  Always check your phone’s specs—or just ask us at The Phonepreneur!

5. “It’s okay to use your phone’s battery till it dies before charging.”

Truth: Biko, stop doing this!

Letting your phone drop to 0% regularly can damage the battery’s health over time. It’s always better to plug in around 20% and unplug around 80-90% if you want your battery to serve you longer. Don’t let your battery suffer because of old-school advice.

6. “Third-party chargers will destroy your phone.”

Truth: Not all third-party chargers are bad.

There are many certified and safe third-party brands like Baseus and Oraimo that make reliable accessories. What you should avoid are cheap, nameless, no-packaging chargers sold by “I get am for back” vendors. If it doesn’t have quality assurance, no plug am.

Rounding Off

In Nigeria, we’re known for street wisdom but not everything we hear on the street is gospel truth. When it comes to your phone’s battery, knowledge is power, and knowing the truth can save you money and stress.

At The Phonepreneur, we’re all about educating, empowering, and helping you make smarter tech choices. So next time someone tells you to put your phone in the freezer when it’s overheating, just laugh and send them this blog.

How to Use a Coupon Code at Checkout on a Website (The Easy Way!)

Have you ever found a coupon code while scrolling online or got one from your favorite store’s Instagram story, only to freeze at checkout wondering, “Where do I even enter this thing?”

You’re not alone! If you’re shopping from an e-commerce store (like ours), applying a coupon code is super simple and we’ll show you how to do it in less than 2 minutes.

Let’s break it down, step by step.

Step 1: Add Your Favorite Items to Cart

First things first, go ahead and add the items you love to your cart.

Step 2: View Cart or Proceed to Checkout

Once you’ve got your items in your cart, you can either:

  • Click “View Cart” to see what you’ve selected, or
  • Hit “Proceed to Checkout” if you’re ready to pay

You can apply your coupon at either of these stages, so don’t stress.

Step 3: Enter Your Coupon Code

Here’s the fun part. On the Cart Page, you’ll see a box labeled “Have a coupon?” Just click it, and a field will drop down where you can type or paste your code. Hit “Apply Coupon” and boom, your discount will be calculated instantly.

On the Checkout Page, there’s also a small line that says “Click here to enter your code” right above the billing details. Tap that, and the coupon box appears.

Easy-peasy.

Step 4: Make Sure It Works

If your coupon is valid, WooCommerce will show a success message and subtract the discount from your total. If there’s an issue (expired code, not eligible, minimum order not met), it’ll tell you right away.

Tip: Always double-check for typos and make sure there are no spaces before or after the code!

Step 5: Checkout and Enjoy Your Savings

Once the coupon is applied, go ahead and finish your checkout as usual. You’ll see the new discounted total. Now all that’s left is to wait for your order to arrive!

Rounding Off

Using a coupon code on an e-commerce store doesn’t have to be confusing or hard. Once you’ve done it once, you become a pro, literally. And you know, nothing beats that feeling of seeing your total drop at checkout! Next time you have a code, use it confidently and keep shopping smart. See you next time!

The Phonepreneur Story

It all started with a broken phone and a simple comment from our mom.

Our Story

From a Comment to a Big Thing

One day, I (Victor) was heading out to get my phone fixed. As I was leaving, my mom stopped me and said, “Instead of always paying people to fix your phone, why don’t you learn how to fix phones yourself?” I didn’t think much of it at first. But later that day, I brought it up with my brother, Light. We started talking about phones, repairs, and business. The more we talked, the more it made sense.

Our mom mentioned the idea to a friend who worked in Computer Village, Lagos. He told her, “This is a great business. People will always need their phones fixed or replaced.” That was it. We knew we had to give it a shot.

We didn’t have much when we started. No fancy shop. No big capital. We only had a drive to learn and a belief that we could make it work. We asked questions, learned from people in the business, and practiced every chance we got. Soon, we weren’t just fixing phones. We started selling them too. That’s how The Phonepreneur was born.

At first, we called our business iPhonePreneur because we focused on iPhones. But people kept asking, “Do you only sell iPhones?” That was a problem. So we changed it to The Phonepreneur to show that we work with all phone brands. And now, we not only deal in phones but in almost everything tech!

Running a business isn’t easy. We’ve had our fair share of struggles. The biggest challenge was during COVID-19. Everything slowed down. People weren’t buying phones like before. We had to think fast. So, we focused on selling online and started doing deliveries. It worked. Another challenge was finding good suppliers. In this business, where you buy your stock matters. We made mistakes at first, but we learned. Now, we work with trusted suppliers to get the best deals.

A Day at The Phonepreneur

Our day starts at 9 AM. We check online orders (most come from Instagram) and get the store ready. By mid-morning, the place is busy. Customers come in for repairs, swaps, or new phones. Some just stop by for consultations. We work non-stop until 6 or 7 PM. At the end of the day, the goal is simple: Make sure every customer leaves happy.

We believe in treating customers right. That’s the key to our success. Some businesses just want to make a sale but we want to build relationships too. Even when a customer is difficult, we stay patient. We explain things. We help them make the best choice. That’s why people trust us.

Also, our customers know that they will always get quantity for us at affordable prices. So, they are stuck with us and we love them just like that!

What we do

At The Phonepreneur, we:

We sell everything Tech: from phones, to computers, to gamings, new and used, all brands.

We do Phone swaps: You can trade in your old phone for a new or better one.

We do Repairs: Come in for quick and reliable fixes for any phone issue.
